How I Work in Therapy
I view therapy as a collaborative process.  My goal is to be empathic, nonjudgmental, and to provide a sanctuary as you explore the choices and relationships that are most important to you.

Clients often come in suffering from anxiety or depression, or have experienced trauma that continues to haunt them.  I offer practical tools and techniques to help alleviate your symptoms and get you back to enjoying your life.  Techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can be extremely helpful and many clients are delighted that their symptoms have abated.  Other clients realize that although currents problems are resolved, there are other long-standing issues they would like to explore.  This is where psychodynamic therapy can be very beneficial.

I believe that the relationships we are in today are a reflection of those of our childhoods.   When we get stuck, it's often because we are repeating patterns or making choices based on what we learned when we were very small.  Without gaining insight into those patterns, we continue to play out the same stories and struggle with the same issues. In psychodynamic therapy, we will join together to get a better understanding of how your environment and family relationships have impacted you in other areas of your life.

Increased self-awareness will be a benefit of therapy, but also importantly, transformation occurs through active pursuit of change.  I will support you in freeing yourself of negative beliefs and behavior patterns that are not working for you.  You have the power to transform your life and improve important relationships by purposefully using insights you glean from our work together.  A meaningful part of your therapy may be practicing new skills, and I may suggest readings or homework to enhance your learning.  Always, I welcome your feedback on how therapy is progressing in our work together.
